About the Designer
Nigel Coates England (1949 - )
Nigel Coates is one of the few English architects who is also renowned as a designer. He maintains the original and coherent idea that architecture and design should carefully reflect the confusion and sensuality of the city. His first success came about in Japan, where, during the 80's and 90's, he designed more than twenty buildings and interior designs. His work reflected that original mixture of enthusiastic intuition and culture that were intrinsic to him. He subsequently built a wide range of shops, restaurants and museums in Europe and Great Britain, including the National Centre for Popular Music and the Geffrye Museum, both in England. These two works were chosen to represent England at the Biennial of Architecture 200. His furniture design and objects in glass, like those for Hitch Mylius and Salviati play with association and context and merge their stylistic references into sensual flowing forms. Throughout his career, Coates promoted his ideas by means of exhibitions and publications, amongst which is his most ambitious book 'Guide to Ecstacity'. He is also professor of Architectural Design at the Royal College of Art, London.

It all began in 1994, in the Swatch era.At that time, Roberto Ziliani designed and organized events and stage scenery in the fashion world, further to his highly valued contribution in the business-to-business area.
Culturally and strategically well formed by the Jesuits of the renowned Liceo Massimo in Roma and having always been head over heels in love with Design, or at least as much as his most secret fishing areas in the Tuscan archipelagos. R.Z. was thunderstruck by an uncontrollable wish: to do something "innovative & important" in the world of design.
This was how the mythical Slamp Tube was born. After several hundreds of thousands of pieces had been sold in the four corners of the world market, today Slamp Tube wields, in an enlightened and enlightening way, all its benefical power of "systemic monolith" founder of the Company and of the Brand. Around the Slamp Tube gravitates, both creatively and joyfully, a growing mini myriad of other "planets" which reflect and exalt its fruitful light.
Similar to the process of photosynthesis related to the sun, in Slamp we have, baptised "Tubosintesi" (Tubesynthesis). Spontaneous and immediate success, in that historical year of 1994, surged from both critics and public alike.
Right from its genesis and from the clear and decided project choice of R.Z., Slamp collaborates with important Artists, Architects and international Designers.
In 1996, the "Atelier" collection, curated by Anna Gili involved 13 Designers, amongst whom Alessandro Mendini, Nanae Umeda, Maria Cristina Hamel, Sanchita Ajjampur, Walter Garro, Massimo Caiazzo, Randi Kristensen, Wendy Weathley.
In 1997, the revolutionary Katalogos n.1,is published, which had been designed and made by Riccardo Raco and François Zille along with R.Z. The first international catalogue of Products in the form of a monography of visual Anthropology & Essay on Linguistics applied to the difficult art of aphorisms.
In 1998 and 1999 the other two Katalogos, nrs.2 and 3 are published - and costitute the hermeneutic Trilogy at the base of the Slamp project - traceable today only through the abundant tribe of Slamp Collectors and at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Roma (Central National Library). In 1998, the Cleto Munari Collection coordinated by François Zille gets together a team of other well known Designers, amongst which Aldo Cibic, Roberto Pezzetta, Riccardo Dalisi, Enzo Cuccaro and Xavier Moulin.
In the same year, 1998, Slamp becomes a company with the Disney licence in the sector of Lighting. The first Slamp Tubes, dedicated to the famous characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, by the brilliant Walt, are designed by Riccardo Raco and the Slamp Team - success is immediate.
In 1999, Riccardo Dalisi designs a series of hanging lamps with his famous "imaginary characters", which have joyfully become universally known as "Dalisini" for the Slamp Children collection.
In 2001, the lamp "Mimì" designed by Massimiliano Datti was reproduced on stamps of the Italian Design series, edited by the Italian Mail to celebrate the firms and products of Made in Italy.
In 2006, Nigel Coates, director of the Department of Architecture of the Royal College of Arts, London, begins to collaborate with Slamp and designs the now famous Slampville collection.
In 2007, the lamp "Fiorella" designed by Nigel Coates wins the prize Homes & Gardens Classic Design Award. In the same year, François Zille returns to teaming up with Roberto Ziliani.The spirit of the beginnings and the propulsive power of this team which gave life to the Case History of Slamp is regenerated.
Today, one of the most frequently studied Case Histories in Italy and in the world, in the field of Design applied to Lighting and in the ambient of the "free of Advertising costs" Brand & Product Communication.
