About the Designer
Joseph Ricchio United States
Joe Ricchio was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from California State University at Long Beach. While at CSULB, Joe Ricchio was selected for CSU International Programs in Florence, Italy, where he immersed himself in the country’s art, design and culture. Following a four-year tenure as product and graphic designer for Ron Loosen Associates, he founded Ricchio Design. From its inception, his consultancy has focused on product, furniture and graphic design. He has designed seating, accessories and more for a virtual who’s-who of contract furniture, most notably the ROSCOE award winning Ricchio Chair. Many of his other designs have garnered recognition as well, including IBD, IDSA and Best of NeoCon awards. Joe Ricchio is also a faculty member of the Design Department at CSULB teaching Furniture Design. In 2004 he established the “Cortona Design Retreat,” taking selected students for the next six years to visit the Milan Furniture Fair and experience Italy.
Debuting in 2008, the Botanist Blank Canvas project features the original, limited-edition Collections of eight designers. Each designer began with a blank Botanist end table, cocktail table and bench and then imprinted them with a unique design. Not only are these pieces eco-friendly, durable and stunning, they also give back: a portion of the sale of every product in the Blank Canvas series goes to a charity of the designer"s choice. This bench features the flowing branch design of Joseph Ricchio, who has worked on a multitude of projects in product, furniture and graphic design, with Kara Larsen.
What was your inspiration? "The concept is my expression of the beauty of life. I chose a delicate and elegant branch with dew dropping off of it to represent earth, water and life."
Why is it important for you to give back? "DIFFA: Design Industry Fighting Aids. I have been donating to them for many years for a variety of reasons: 1) Larry Pond was the Director of Design at Stendig and introduced my first chair, he began DIFFA and has since died of AIDS, 2) I have a family member that is HIV positive and 3) I believe it is simply a good choice."
This Design Benefits: A percentage of the sale of the Albero Bench goes to the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, one of the country's largest supporters of direct care for people living with HIV/AIDS and preventive education for those at risk.
