There is no cover on the topside so most of the light goes upward towards ceiling which works well for my location. The bottom side of light has glass cover so the downward light is very diffused. if light and fits perfectly. It's very simple. If it was less expensive for what it is I would put them everywhere. I mounted this in my stairway and it makes it look like an unfinished product. This would be a good item if mounted high enough that you could not see the top but not for any place where you your guests can see that there is no top to it. Was this helpful? Yes / No

It's situated 10 ft above ground between our dining and living rooms up-lighting an 18 ft wall/ceiling. We agree with previous reviewer this sconce would not be appropriate if looked down upon as the top portion is open exposing bare incandescent bulb. Super easy to install. BUT, we have ours in the stairwell and it does not look nice from above. There is no glass cover on top, and it unfinshed/broken when viewed from the top.
