Carl F. Martens was born in California in 1878. An assistant district attorney for the city of Berkeley, Martens was also a competent painter. He was active in the San Francisco Bay area in the late 1920s. He died in Berkeley, CA on April 19, 1938. Exhibited: Oakland Art Gallery, 1928 (Mt Diablo and Miner's Pass).The Gingko Salad Servers in Satin are inspired by the poetic shape of the gingko leaf which was widely used as a motif in classical Chinese and Japanese as well as during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
