About the DesignerAbi Alice
Abi Alice is a Sydney-based artist and designer whose practice spans many disciplines. Alice initially studied silver-smithing, creating tableware and jewelry, and later undertook her Masters pursuing photography and painting. Mathematics, form, color geometry, folding and abstraction are frequently explored in Alice's work. Currently her practice is predominantly focused on photography, painting and product design. She approaches her design work from an artistic point of view. In many instances her geometric paintings become the foundation for her product design.
It seems in recent years that Australia, homeland of the famous Mark Newson, is becoming a crucible of young, dynamic and interesting designers. This large Resonance Centerpiece revisits a theme already addressed in Italian design: that of the sheet steel cut first flat, then bent and welded to achieve its final form, recalling the basket designed by Bruno Munari for Danese in the ‘50s and the experiments of Silvio Coppola for us in the early '70s, but done with such new grace and freshness as to merit production.
