House Tour: Scandinavian + Mid-Century

Bring this iconic and functional style into your home with our editor’s picks.

Design: Veneer Designs

Bright and serene, this house marries multifunctional mid-century design with the whimsical charm of Scandinavian style. The natural beauty of this modern home lies in its spacious, single-level floor plan. The ranch-style architecture provides open living space and clean lines lending itself to easy decorating with an open room concept. The concrete structure, white walls, and light pine wood flooring serve as a neutral backdrop for comfortable, yet purposeful furnishings, and simple, decorative accents. Find out how you can achieve this look in your own home with our tips below.

Living Room

Set directly off the kitchen for easy access, this open space is perfect for entertaining. A lean, upholstered gray sofa, with exposed wooden legs, acts as both a focal point and a natural divider. Pillows boasting varying geometric patterns create a cohesive artistic accent. Layered sisal rugs break up the vastness of the light floors, while a trio of wooden tripod nesting tables add character.

A Tetris-style cherry wood credenza with smooth lines proudly displays plants, picture frames or various knick-knacks, and can very easily double as a bar table. A brightly-hued ceramic lamp with a drum shade is a great way to incorporate a fun, unique pop of color.

Bedroom

Laid-back and cool, this simple bedroom may appear sparse, but upon closer look, is both comfortable and warm. Light wood and indigo blue provide an organic color palette and create a calming, restful vibe. A futon-style bed with white linen sheets centers the room, while a shibori tapestry acts as makeshift headboard.

Exposed light bulbs hang from the ceiling, while wooden stools, on each side of the bed, substitute end tables. A simple five-drawer dresser complements the wooden floors while also providing storage. Small, decorative items are used sparingly; a petite succulent and a pair of framed prints add character.

Sitting Area

Design: Veneer Designs

This room plays up the light and airy characteristics of traditional Scandinavian style with its wall of windows and muted white-and-gray tones. Designed to feel as if you are sitting outside, this space accentuates the house’s mid-century construction by highlighting the asymmetrical, lofted ceiling and heavy use of concrete.

An elongated futon with a wooden base is multifunctional and surprisingly stylish. Palms, ferns or small succulents in simple terracotta planters look right at home in this pseudo-outdoor space, simultaneously adding a pop of color. Pine end tables and a folding chair with a draped sheepskin rug, add warmth and a mix of texture to this casual space.
