Wall Art Size + Placement
Looking for a place to start? It's easy.
A curated collection of wall art isn't just for Influencers. You can make this on-trend dream a reality with our simple steps. Check out our tips below for choosing wall art sizes and placement.
Wall Art Sizes
Mini
Mini wall art ranges from 10" to 17" in height and width. It can stand alone or be used as part of a bigger collection.
Small
Small wall art ranges from 18" to 24" in height and width. This size is great within a group or paired with another print for a symmetrical look. Small wall art can be hung in rooms that are limited on space, like a bathroom.
Medium
Medium wall art ranges from 25" to 32" (about 2' or 3') in height and width. This size is ideal for a home office or entryway, as these simple pieces can stand alone but won't overwhelm midsize rooms.
Large
Large wall art ranges from 33" to 40" (between 2 1/2' and 4') in height and width. A living room or bedroom wall with just one piece of large art ties the room together for a simple, on-trend look.
Oversized
Oversized wall art is 41" or larger in height and width. Pieces this large can stand alone as the sole focal point of a room. Measure your space before installing an oversized art piece, as it may overwhelm a small space.
Width
It does involve a bit of math – we're sorry! – but here's our simple formula for getting it right the first time:
[Wall width] x 0.57 = [Ideal width of artwork]
If you're working with a cluster of various pieces, use the same formula to find the ideal width that the pieces should fill while leaving 2" – 3" between each frame.
Height
The same formula can also be used to find the ideal height for a vertically oriented piece. The overall area (height x width) of the artwork should cover 2/3 to 3/4 of the open wall space.
Pro Tip:
Bigger is better. When considering which wall art size is best for your space, opt for a larger piece rather than choosing wall art that's too small. You don't want to underwhelm the room.
Wall Art Placement Tips
Check out our easy tips for placing artwork.
The middle of the artwork should hang about 57" from the floor (this is roughly eye level for most people). If the piece is hanging above a sofa, make sure to leave at least 6" – 12" between the top of the sofa and the art.
If your ceilings are on the lower side (below 8'), visually break your wall into four sections (from floor to ceiling). Hang the art in the third section from the bottom.
If you're hanging multiple pieces off wall art that have varying heights, make sure the middle of each piece lines up on your wall.
When hanging artwork above your stairs, hang one piece every third step to achieve a diagonal look.
Think about the room in which you want to hang your art. If it already has a lot of decor, opt for one large piece so you don't have too many smaller pieces overwhelming the room.
Wall Art Ideas
Gallery walls are an awesome and inexpensive way to fill your home with your favorite pieces. Make sure you leave enough blank space around the artwork to keep it from getting too cluttered or feeling cramped. The left side of a group of art can usually handle more visual weight (bigger pieces, thicker frames, or darker colors) because our eyes naturally scan from left to right.
Pro Tip:
Trace the pieces for your gallery wall on kraft paper, cut it out, and use painter's tape to find the best arrangement without making a bunch of holes in your walls.
Display Shelves
Floating display shelves are a clever way to show off your favorite art pieces. We love staggering the shelves for an eclectic, laid-back vibe. Feeling a more polished look? Install your shelves in a uniform line for a modern and sophisticated touch. If you prop artwork up on a shelf instead of nailing it to the wall, you can swap it out seasonally or whenever your mood changes.
Pro Tip:
Cultivate your look by placing decorative objects like books and faux plants between paintings and framed photos.
