If you're looking for a new chandelier – or you've recently bought one – we know that its size and placement are your top two priorities. Check out our easy sizing and placement tips below to simplify your life.

Chandelier Size

No matter what type of chandelier you're looking for – sputnik, statement, shaded, candle-style, or lantern – the dimensions of your space are the key to getting the size right. If the fixture is too big or too small, the room will feel off. Before clicking "add to bag," we recommend measuring the length and width of your room and the height of your ceilings.

Chandelier Width

Measure the room's length and width in feet and add those two numbers together. Use that number as the width in inches for your chandelier. So if your room is 10' x 16', add those together to get 26'. Go ahead and choose a 26" wide chandelier.

If the chandelier is going over a table, the width of the chandelier should be 12" narrower than the width of the table. You don't want anyone bumping their head on their way to grab another bottle of vino.

Chandelier Height

Our tip for chandelier height is to look for an option with 3" of height for every foot of space between the floor and ceiling. Multiply the height of your ceiling (in feet) by three to get the length of your chandelier in inches. So if your ceilings are 8' high, your chandelier should be 24" tall (8 x 3 = 24).

Where to Place Your Chandelier

The two most important things to consider when placing a chandelier? Its height and where it will live in the room. Mounting the chandelier in the wrong spot can really hurt the room's aesthetic. Too low and no one will be able to walk underneath, too high and the light will be too dim. With the simple tips below, we've made it easy to place a chandelier in any room.

Dining Room

Hanging Height: The bottom of the chandelier should hang 30" – 36" above the table.
Where to Hang: Mount the chandelier in the middle of the dining table – not in the middle of the room. If you have a sideboard or buffet table, the dining table might be placed off-center, so a chandelier hanging in the middle of the space can confuse the eye – and make the room feel smaller.

Above a Kitchen Island

Hanging Height: The bottom of the chandelier should hang 30" – 36" above the countertop.
Where to Hang: Center the chandelier in the middle of the island. If you plan to hang multiple pendant lights or mini chandeliers, place the lights 30" apart along the center width of the island. If you're hanging three lights, center one above the middle of the island and hang the other two 30" apart on either side.

Entryway, Bedroom, or Living Room

Hanging Height: The bottom of the chandelier should hang at least 7' above the floor. If your ceiling is higher than 8', mount the chandelier an additional 3" higher for every extra foot above 8'. If you're hanging the chandelier in a two-story foyer, the bottom of the fixture should hang at the same level as the second floor.
Where to Hang: If your entryway is on the larger side, place a chandelier over a round table to make a big statement. In smaller entryways, the chandelier should hang in the middle of the room. In your bedroom or living room, place your chandelier in the middle of the room or above your bed or coffee table. Mini chandeliers are on trend and look amazing when hung above nightstands.

Bathroom

Hanging Height:The bottom of the chandelier should be at least 8' above the highest point of the tub's edge.
Where to Hang:Chandeliers must be at least 3' from the edge of the tub or shower. For safety reasons, make sure the chandelier is enclosed or made for moisture-rich environments.
