When it comes to buying a new piece of custom furniture, understanding everything from cushion fill to frame construction can be a daunting process. While there are many things to consider,we simplified the decision-making process with this easy-to-reference upholstery guide. It's filled with tips and the must-know information for picking your perfect AllModern piece, complete with a fabric that's right for your lifestyle.

Cushions: Plush and Firm

Our designers create our cushioning with support and comfort in mind. Made with 50-percent gray duck down and 50-percent fiber, each cushion is soft to the touch.

Crafted with superior ultra-cell foam, cushions are wrapped in down first, and stuffed into yet another down jacket-like casing for extra plushness. From there, they are gently wrapped into a sturdy high thread count bag to not only protect the feathers but to add an additional layer of support for a comfortable seat.

Frames: Reinforced and Time-Tested

Constructed with high-quality natural wood, each frame is built with distinction and longevity in mind. Our frames are reinforced with laminate to create a sturdy base and crafted to provide durable support for years to come.

Fabrics: Elevated, yet Everyday Casual

Learn the basics of upholstery textiles with a sampling of our most popular materials below.

Blended Linen

Linen isn't just for the summer months. Its breathable, lightweight property gives this fabric a woven, textured look that's both cozy and breezy at the same time.
Available in a variety of shades, linen can create a relaxed, well-tailored look for your room.

Cotton Twill

Easily the most durable upholstery fabric, cotton twill requires minimal maintenance and will keep its shape over time.

Cotton twill's soft and pliable qualities make it a popular choice for any room, plus it's available in a variety of slipcovers for an easy, yet modern refresh.

Microsuede

For a super soft and cozy option, microsuede adds a luxe factor to your room without compromising on comfort.

Designed with tightly woven fibers, this fabric is very easy to clean and tends to be more pet- and child-friendly.

Polyester

Woven from durable fibers, polyester is easy to maintain with its fade- and stain-resistant properties.

Available in a wide variety of chic color options, polyester can achieve the same tailored look as linen or cotton twill at an affordable price point.

Leather

With a buttery soft feel, leather gives your room a stately, sophisticated look.

Incredibly durable and enriched with character, leather is resistant to spills and will wear well over time.

Color Palette: Endless Possibilities

With the large variety of color options for our custom upholstery furniture, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Whether you are torn between a few hues or many, consider ordering fabric swatches in both solids and patterns. This will give you a much better sense of how your color choices will look against the other furnishings in your home.

Tips for choosing a color:

  • Steer clear of upholstery that matches your walls and curtains. Varying complementary tones will give your room a more cohesive, balanced feel.
  • To visualize a new hue in your home, find a blanket or sheet in a similar color and experiment by draping it over existing furnishings.
  • If you decide on white or neutral upholstery, dress up your furniture with pops of color or patterns in accent pillows or throw blankets.

Care Instructions: Easy and Effortless

Machine-washable: While most of our fabrics are machine washable, it is important to follow any of the instructions included with your new piece of furniture. Before washing, make sure to secure all zippers and use a mild detergent in cold water. Tumble dry low for about 5-15 minutes or until the cushions are only slightly damp.

Non-machine-washable: Spot clean non-machine-washable fabrics with a water-free solvent for best results. When cleaning leather, make sure to remove your furniture from sunlight to prevent cracking or slight fading. Leather conditioner is a great product to use periodically, while vacuuming regularly helps to eliminate any spills.
