Indoor Plant Room Inspiration

Houseplants in metal planters.

Plant room ideas are trending in the interior design world and we couldn't be happier because chilling out in a plant room is proven to reduce stress. Once you're done posting a pic of your plant room aesthetic on Instagram, leave your phone in another room and sit down to zone out. Check out our favorite tips for achieving a plant room below.

Be Boho

Placing a few varieties of plants together sets the stage for a boho-inspired indoor plant room. Think pothos, snake plants, fiddle-leaf figs, succulents, and money plants for a mix of sizes, shapes, and shades of greenery. Complete the look by twisting string lights around your plants and putting a macrame wall hanging next to hanging plants.

Pro Tip:

A pouf is a great boho addition to your plant room. It doesn't take up a lot of space, and you can use it as a footrest or bonus seating when guests come over.

Make It Tropical

A tropical room is just the thing for taking an indoor plant room up a notch. Add botanical-inspired art to walls to make them pop. Place the largest plants around the corners of the room and the smallest ones on end tables or shelves to recreate that all-encompassing tropical jungle feeling.

Bring In an Old Bookcase

So you went from being an avid paperback fan to only carrying an e-reader? That's great, actually. Use an old bookcase to line up planters in your plant room. Place plants with long vines on the tallest shelves so they have room to grow to their full potential and plants that prefer low light conditions on bottom shelves.

Show Your Bar Cart Some Love

A bar cart is a great plant room idea because of its convenience and its decor potential. Figure out which plants in your plant room will need the most water, and style those on top of a bar cart. Simply roll the cart over to the kitchen when it's time to water plants.

Use Wall Space to Your Advantage

Nail a wall-mounted coat rack to the wall in your living room to hang small pots from. To create even more surface area for plants, choose a coat rack with a built-in top shelf. Use wall space near windows for sun-loving succulents.

Create a Room Divider

If you live in a studio and don't have a lot of extra room to spare, create a plant wall to separate your plant room from your living room or the rest of your apartment. Instead of using actual room dividers, opt for a large room-dividing bookcase. It's open on all sides, making it easy to see and care for plants at any angle. Fill it with plants like philodendrons, mini monsteras, ferns, and your go-to decor to define the space.

Go Small

If you're really limited on space and looking for plant room ideas, shy away from pots and opt for vases or glass candle holders. Place a few plants together to create fullness. If you're interested in starting a terrarium, choose a glass lantern.

Indoor Plant Room Tips

Avoid Rugs + Solid Hardwood

When building out an indoor plant room, the only places we try to avoid are areas with real hardwood floors or carpet because water can quickly damage the floors. Your safest bet is to place plants on ceramic, porcelain, concrete, or vinyl floors. Engineered wood floors are fine, but solid hardwood should be avoided at all costs.

Warmth Is Key

Humidity is great for plants. Keep a few plants grouped together to increase the humidity in the air, but not clustered so tightly that they don't have room to grow. For even more humidity, consider adding a humidifier to your indoor plant room.

Consider Your Pets

Some plants can be poisonous to cats and dogs. Make sure to research new plants before placing them anywhere your pet might be able to get to and chew on. If your pup just can't stay away, opt for hanging pots or planters instead.

Remember the Seasons

Aside from the shorter days of winter, the sunlight also doesn't shine as brightly as it does in summertime. If you're worried about weak rays, place a lamp with a fluorescent bulb near plants to help promote growth and keep them happy year-round.

Shop Table Lamps

Keep It Moving

Plants love good airflow and ventilation. To mimic outdoor wind, keep the ceiling fan turned on or place a standing fan nearby.

Indoor Garden Ideas

If you've already perfected the plant room and want to do a little indoor gardening, you're in luck. Even in a small apartment, there are still plenty of nooks that are great for plants and herbs. Check out the simple ways you can add a little greenery to every room.

Take Advantage of a Windowsill

No matter how tiny your condo might be, there's always a windowsill that's perfect for a plant or two. They are especially great for small succulents and air plants.

Grow Up

Use a vertical wall planter to hang plants along a wall. Wall planters are great for smaller apartments, entryways, and hallways because they don't take up any floor space.

Grow Herbs on Kitchen Counters

Indoor gardening ideas wouldn't be complete without a few herbs to jazz up cocktails. Use a kitchen counter as a makeshift garden center, and you'll be spicing up a margherita pizza with fresh basil in no time.

Maximize Your Bathroom

Bathrooms make a great space for plants because they love humidity. Use plants as vanity decor or hang a hanging planter from the ceiling or over the shower head. Taking a shower while watering your plants? We love multitasking.
