Our Easy Dining Table Size Guide
You'll be hosting friends in no time.
Looking for a dining table that's the right size, on trend, and optimizes your space? We've got you. We know it can be tricky to find a table that effortlessly fits in with your room and looks great. Check out our easy tips below and you'll be hosting a weekend brunch – or pizza night – in no time.
Dining Table Height
The two most common dining table heights are standard and counter. Standard-height tables run between 28" and 33". This is a great height to choose for small children and works well for a wide range of mobility. Counter-height tables range in size from 34" and up. These are great tables for small spaces because the height creates a more open look. If you're buying a dining table and chairs separately, make sure you check the seat height. You'll want to leave 10" – 12" between the chair seat and the bottom of the table.
The dining table's width is measured along the head of the table. The width is important because it determines how many serving pieces you can fit on the table at one time. We recommend choosing a table that's no wider than 48" so you can easily pass your homemade gnocchi – or let's be real, your takeout containers – across the table. If you have a sideboard or buffet table, you can choose a narrower table – something as small as 30" wide should do the trick.
Dining Table Length
To make sure all guests are comfy, we like to give everyone at least 24" – 26" of horizontal space. One of the best ways to do this is by keeping 6" between each chair. If you're picking out dining chairs separately, knowing the table's length will help you figure out how many chairs can fit on each side of your table.
Dining Room Measurements
Both the length and width of your table affect how you'll move around your dining space. There should be at least 36" – 48" of space between your table and the wall for easiest movement. We also suggest leaving at least 48" of space between your table and any doorways.
