We love sectional sofas because they maximize seating areas, but they can be difficult to place in a room due to their size. Before you click "add to cart" on a new sofa, check out our tips for getting the measurements right.

Before You Begin: Understand Sectional Dimensions

There's no one-size-fits-all model when it comes to sectional sofa dimensions because they are highly customizable. However, there are a few general measurements to consider when measuring for a sectional sofa. Check out our sectional diagram for overall measurements to keep in mind.

Overall Length

This is the combined measurement of the right- or left-hand loveseat and the corner chair. The overall length of a sectional sofa is usually between 94" and 156" (about 8' – 13') long.

Overall Width

This is the total measurement of all the components along the back of the sofa. In the above illustration, the components include the chaise on the left side, the armless loveseat in the middle, and the corner chair on the right side. The overall width of a sectional sofa is usually longer than its length and tends to fall between 94" and 168" wide.

Other Measurements

The measurements of the interior sides of the sectional sofa are important if you're thinking about pairing your sectional with a coffee table or ottoman.

3 Easy Steps to Measure for a Sectional Sofa

1. Measure Your Space

To measure your space for a sectional sofa, first record the length, width, and height of the room. These numbers will be the baseline for what sectional size can comfortably fit in your space.

Pro Tip:

Don't forget to measure doorways, hallways, and other areas (like your foyer) that the sofa will be carried through when it's delivered. Sometimes a sectional's legs can be removed, making it easier to squeeze through narrow spaces.

2. Tape the Area

Once you know how large your room is, choose the spot where you want to place your sectional. It shouldn't live anywhere that obstructs the natural flow of movement through your home.

Mark the spot out on the floor with masking or painter's tape. The measurements don't have to be exact – they serve as guidelines to help you visualize how much space the sofa will take up. You can remove and re-tape as many times as you need until you're sure you have the best position outlined.

3. Measure the Area

Measure the dimensions of the area you've marked. You probably won't find a sectional that's an exact fit, but you can use the measurements as a general guide for what size will fit best in that space. If you're thinking about placing the sofa in front of windows, make sure to measure the height of your windowsills. You don't want the back of your sofa to be higher than the sill.

Pro Tip:

You might want to move your sofa from time to time. Before you buy, it's always good to measure for multiple arrangements to make sure your sectional can comfortably fit in other positions.
