How to Find the Right TV Stand
Get ready to binge your favorite shows.
We know that you want an aesthetically pleasing and sturdy TV stand to add to your living room. But we know you also need something that lets you watch Netflix from a comfy distance. Check out our tips below for finding the best TV stand for your home.
Finding the Right TV Stand Dimensions
Step 1: Measure Your TV
Start by measuring the distance from the top left corner of your TV to the bottom right corner. TV stands are sold by the max TV size they can accommodate – which is described by that diagonal measurement and not by height or width. If your TV isn't a flat-screen TV, measure the depth of your TV to make sure it fits comfortably on or in your entertainment center without any overhang.
Step 2: Find a Place for Your TV Stand
Where you place the TV stand depends on your room's layout and the location of cable connections. We don't recommend placing your TV or stand in front of a window. The backlight from the window makes it difficult to see the screen, and you'll be blocking natural light from entering the room. Try to center your TV in the middle of the largest seating area in your room.
Keep your floor space in mind when placing your TV stand. You should leave plenty of space between your TV and viewers. We recommend these distances for typical TV sizes:
- For a 29" TV, allow for 3' – 4' of open space
- For a 39" TV, allow for 4' – 5' of open space
- For a 46" TV, allow for 5' – 6' of open space
- For anything larger, allow for 7' – 8' of open space
Make sure to choose a TV stand that won't occupy so much of your room that the TV is hard to watch.
Step 3: Determine the Height of Your TV Stand
For the comfiest viewing, the lower half of your TV screen should be level with your line of sight when you are seated. To figure out how tall your TV stand should be, sit on your sofa and measure the distance from the floor to your eyes. The shelf where the TV rests should be no lower than 12" below that measurement.
If you're not sure what type of TV stand you want, check out the different options below.
TV Stands
TV stands are long, simple cabinet units with a place to set your TV and store extra items like chargers, cable boxes, game consoles, and remotes. TV stands are low profile and come in many different materials and designs so they fit well in rooms of all styles and sizes.
Entertainment Centers
Entertainment centers are large pieces of furniture that hold and surround the TV. They have more storage space than TV stands. Entertainment centers can be as tall as 72" and come in a variety of designs. Since they're on the larger side, they aren't ideal for smaller rooms.
