Black paint on the metal parts is flat black, understated, but works perfectly. I am surprised at the high quality of the leather sling used in this piece. It is a split hide and thin, but perfectly adequate for the job being tasked. I recommend this rack to anyone looking for a good quality, reasonably priced magazine rack. I just put this together, but it appears to be a well-made product. It was fairly easy to assemble (I did it alone). There are extra holes drilled into the side beams so you can vary the shelving height. I chose to install them as shown in the photo. I wish that the little hooks they provide could be attached to the top shelf instead of right in the middle. I can't see myself using them since anything hanging from those hooks will be pretty close to the floor.
