We searched online and in stores for a long time before landing on the Dakota bookcase, and I'm glad we took our time. We bought two. They're well-built and higher quality than I expected. The wood grain is unusual, but harmonious and not distracting. The legs give them a kind of finished appearance that's perfect in our 1960's apartment. They come assembled - you only have to add the feet - and with the "white glove" service, the guys delivered, set them up and took away all the packing in a jiffy. The only thing I would add is a leveling knob at the bottom of the legs. Our 1960s apartment doesn't have very level floors and it took some futzing with pads to get them even.. Anonymous. Love this bookshelf. Easy to set up (just had to flip the drawer handles). White glove delivery could have been better, they had to leave it in my unit when I wasn't there and they just put it in the middle and didn't unpack it and take away the boxing (which I'd expect with white glove delivery, so keep in mind if ordering that way).. Clean lines, understated looks, and smart storage. Open Plan has this whole simplicity thing down pat. Display all your fine ephemera up top and cram the rest of your belongings behind classy closed doors with absolutely zero judgment.

I finally pulled the trigger on this shelving unit, as it was the perfect size for an odd-sized wall in a rental house. Overall, the piece is solid but has some flaws indicative of flatpack -- small inconsistencies like visible gaps in a few places where they shouldn't be, visible factory-applied adhesive in a few places, and one shelf with an edge cut slightly crooked to where it was a frustration point during assembly. BluDot has consistently and substantially raised their prices over the past couple of years (this shelf has almost doubled in price), but quality seems as though it is not keeping up with the price point. I purchased the low shelf from the same Open Plan series a couple of years ago and it does not suffer from any of the same issues. I would definitely recommend waiting to purchase BluDot items until they run their annual (sometimes semi-annual, these days) sale.. S. Owensboro, KY. Fri Apr 24 2026
