If the large bottom piece were a bit smaller than the top, it would prevent bumping the corners and eventually damaging them. I was looking for a solid wood coffee table that had bottom shelving. The plan was to fill it with books and I did! It's a coffee table bookshelf - LOL! I had an amazing experience with All Modern (not so much with their sister company Wayfair). I will rearrange the books some but the plan is to keep this thing filled with books and drink coasters; this is my reading living room. :) You can buy the stain finish online to refinish it every year or so.
