Professor Oiva Toikka is one of the greatest names in Finnish glass design. Born 1931 in Viipuri, Finland, Toikka attended the Institute of Industrial Arts, Helsinki, and worked at Arabia ceramic factory in 1950's. He began his career as a glass designer at Nuutajarvi glassworks in 1963.
Toikka has enjoyed an international career and received numerous awards, among them Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal (1980), World Glass Now 85 Award, Kaj Franck Design Prize (1992), the Finland Prize (2000),and the Prince Eugen Medal.
Toikka's glass art is imaginative, rich, and bold, deviating from the streamlined aesthetic of Nordic design. His apparently limitless imagination, combined with a sophisticated knowledge of glass, has made it possible for him and his glass-blowers to create small miracles of life, sought after by collectors all over the world. The Birds collection is his best-known work.
