Peter Zumthor

Peter ZumthorPeter Zumthor was born in Basel in 1943. He is thought of as one of the most interesting international architects of the 21st century. Having studied at the Schule fuer Gestaltung in Basel and at the Pratt Institute in New York, he renovated various protected buildings in the canton of Graubünden, before opening his own studio in 1979. His main works include the Sogn Benedetg Chapel in Somvitg (1988), the thermal baths in Vals (1996), the Kunsthaus in Bregenz (1997) and the Swiss Pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hanover. Zumthor incorporates his immense knowledge of materials into Modernist construction and design, exploring tactile and sensory qualities of these materials and space to achieve a minimalist feel.
