About the Designer

Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen Denmark

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17. He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting which is what he is most famous for. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction—compared to man’s need for light remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting.

About the Manufacturer

For more than eighty years, Louis Poulsen has collaborated with visionary architects and designers to produce innovative lighting solutions for buildings and their surroundings. The superior styling, craftsmanship and quality of Louis Poulsen products can be found in prominent projects worldwide. The US subsidiary, Louis Poulsen Lighting, Inc., was founded in 1985. Indoor showrooms complement an extensive display of outdoor products featured in and around the award winning Louis Poulsen Lighting, Inc. headquarters.

The Louis Poulsen product philosophy starts with the development of lighting solutions, which is a demanding task requirement far more than just an understanding of the characteristics of light. Reflective properties of an endless variety of building and landscape materials, lamp technologies, architectural aesthetics, energy efficiency and agency requirements must be carefully blended to provide the best solution for your project.

The foundation for today's innovative lighting solutions was firmly laid in the 1920’s when the famous Danish architect, Poul Henningsen, working together with Louis Poulsen, crafted a brilliant mix of technology and design that advanced light delivery systems to their rightful place among architectural elements. Mr. Henningsen's revolutionary philosophy and long affiliation with Louis Poulsen was just the beginning of what has become a continuing line of collaboration with other visionary architects and designers.

Year after year this combination of ingenuity, experience and innovation results in the award winning designs that keep Louis Poulsen at the forefront of the lighting industry.
