Ulrica Hydman-Vallien is foremost a designer in glass, but one look at her portfolio reveals her passion for painting with oils and watercolors, a love for ceramics, a spiritual union with nature. She paints in a variety of techniques, her signature style saturated colors painted resolutely and boldly onto the surface of the glass as though it were a three-dimensional canvas. Stockholm native Ulrica was brought up in an artistic family (with a mother who was also her mentor), and was schooled at the National College of Art, Craft and Design, as well as scholarship programs in the U.S. and Mexico. She joined the company in 1972 and has been awarded major scholarships and prizes, exhibited in museums and shows worldwide, and has lectured at the Bildwerk in Germany and at the famous Pilchuck Glass Center school in Washington state.“Is this mine or yours?” With Kosta Boda’s incredibly popular Mine glasses, bowls and plates there’s no question, because each piece is unique. Mine addresses our psychological need to have something of our own, if even temporarily. And as host, you can offer choices: “Black, white, pink, amber, pale green, dark green, turquoise, blue?” With its swirls of rich color, Mine is charming and fun, has a built-in story, is eminently collectible, and makes a one-of-a-kind gift.
