Meet the Designer

Kosta Boda Linen Crystal Hurricane

Imagine your dining table as a stage, sparking with crystal and glowing with pools of light focused and refracted by these graceful stems, plates, bowls and vases. The intricate engraved patterns reflect and scatter the light and add sparkle to your parties and dinners. Limelight takes its name from the theatrical lighting of yesteryear, only now the light itself is the star of the show. Applause! And what a unique collectible; tomorrow's heirloom.

About the Designer

Goran Warff

Goran Warff Sweden (1933 - )

Goran Warff represents two artistic eras at Kosta Boda. He first joined the company in 1964 from a smaller Swedish glassworks and studies in industrial design at a Bauhaus-influenced school in Ulm, Germany. After 10 years of helping define a style with his innovative designs and processes, Göran took leave for Australia, then England, where he worked and taught. He returned to Kosta Boda in 1984, and as before, created designs that have defined their times in glass artistry. Like other artists and craftspeople of Kosta Boda this native of the island of Gotland, Sweden, is inspired by the immediacy of nature, of sea and sky, forest and farm, experienced by all Swedes, including city dwellers. His trademark designs are organic in form – most often hand-worked right out of the furnace – that draw on the qualities of glass as a viscous fluid frozen into gleaming crystal. Inspired by Swedish history and nature, Göran Wärff has created a collection of tableware named in honor of Carl von Linné (Linnaeus), father of modern taxonomy, the comprehensive system for classifying plants and animals. With their gently rounded stems and bases and open bowls, Linné evokes plant forms and the design language of Linnaeus' own age—an artistic flourish that takes us back in time, reliving the 265-year history of our company and of the great scientist himself.

About the Manufacturer

Over the centuries, the artists and craftsmen of Kosta Boda have not only embodied the distinctive folkways of Scandinavian design, but helped define those traditions. When you buy and give Kosta Boda, you're buying and giving history - a lineage of great design and craftsmanship that has endured for more than 260 years.

When the USA was established our company was nearly 50 years old. The original Kosta glassworks was born in 1742 as a partnership, the name an acronym from the partners' surnames: Anders KOskull and Georg Boglislaus STAël von Holstein. As Kosta grew and prospered, we helped grow an entire industry in Småland, Sweden's "Kingdom of Glass." In the 20th century, Kosta and neighboring glasshouses Åfors and Boda, were merged under a common owner. In 1976, we were renamed Kosta Boda.

What makes Kosta Boda so special is that we continually draw on our long history in developing exciting new ideas and methods in design and glass craftsmanship. Kosta Boda's designers and glassmakers are showcased in exhibitions and permanent private and public collections throughout the world.
