Bertil Vallien Sweden (1938 - )

Bertil Vallien was born in 1938 north of Stockholm. He trained in ceramics at the Technical School of Arts and has a master’s degree in industrial design. After he completed his studies, Bertil Vallien worked for some years in Los Angeles where his art attracted much attention. Bertil Vallien is a master of dimension. He worked as a glass designer for Kosta Boda from 1963 but was noted for several other genres. Examples of Bertil Vallien’s work can be seen at all of the large Swedish art museums.

The dream-like visage appears over and over in Vallien’s work in both his collections of practical household pieces like bowls, vases and plates, as well as his pure art glass. The enigmatic Brains series lies somewhere between sculpture and functional art: paper weights, good luck charms, desktop accessories. Each handmade Brain is crafted in a different technique, each has its own story to tell. Made to collect and to give to someone very special.
