About the Designer
Marcel BreuerMarcel Breuer Hungary (1902 - 1981)

Protégé of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer embodied many of the School's distinctive concepts and was and one of the School's most famous students. He returned shortly thereafter to teach carpentry from 1925 to 1928, and during this time designed his tubular-steel furniture collection: functional, simple and distinctly modern. His attention drifted towards architecture, and after practicing privately, he worked as a professor at Harvard's School of Design under Gropius. Breuer was also honored as the first architect to be the sole artist of an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Wassily chair was named after his Bauhaus roommate Wassily Kandinsky.

As a Bauhaus apprentice in 1925, Marcel Breuer was inspired by the functional design of a bicycle's tube frame and conceived the first tubular steel chair. The concept of a combining steel tubes and leather strips to create a chair was innovative, yet so functionally and aesthetically sound that the Wassily chair has become a classic symbol of modernism. Named after the artist, Wassily Kandinsky, the Wassily chair is made of tubular steel finished in polished chrome.

The Design

Marcel Breuer's designs stand today as paradigms of 20th Century design. The Wassily chair won the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1968, and in 1982 it garnered recognition as a "Piece of Art" in West Germany. The seemingly simple design is truly inspired by the Bauhaus era, giving this chair a classic look and feel.

Every Wassily chair has an individual number of identification and authenticity. In addition, the KnollStudio® logo and Marcel Breuer's signature are stamped into the base of the chair. Variety of leathers, the Wassily chair will become the perfect addition to your modern home.

Questions & Answers

?
“Hi, I want to be sure they're made from real leather. Can you confirm this for me?” asked by Moses

A.
"Hello Moses, the leather used is belting leather, which is a full grain leather. Belting leather is the only kind of leather used in luxury products that can retain its shape without the need for a separate frame."Erica from Wayfair

Great classic

We bought two; one yellow and one purple with white leather sofas. They are a fabulous additions to our living room. You have to sit in them to believe how comfortable they really are.

We love them.

Bought two of them. Got them on sale so didn't really pay the full price but still feel they are little pricey...
