About the Designer
Harry Bertoia (1915 - 1978)

Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia garnered icon status as a designer when he created the Bertoia Collection for Knoll in 1952. Italian-born, Bertoia utilized his superior skills as a sculptor to bend and shape industrial wire rods into chairs that would become pinnacles of twentieth century furniture design. Now considered modern classics, the Collection was so commercially successful that it allowed Bertoia to dedicate himself exclusively to his main artistic passion: sculpting. His awards include the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects, as well as AIA's Gold Medal. The Design


Harry Bertoia’s 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including this environment-enhancing barstool. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the Bertoia barstool’s delicate filigree appearance belies its strength and durability. In Bertoia’s own words, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them.” The barstool is available in counter and bar height.

• Care & Maintenance



• For the polished chrome rods, Knoll recommends cleaning with Windex or an automotive chrome cleaner such as Semi-Chrome twice a month
• Apply a coat of hard paste wax to protect against moisture
• For the stainless steel connections, Knoll recommends using Windex, Fantastik, or other non-abrasive household cleaners. For small scratches, rub with Comet, Ajax, or other mild abrasives in the direction of the grain. Apply a coat of auto wax to maintain beauty
• To clean the optional black or white rilsan finish, Knoll recommends using Windex, Fantastik, or other ordinary non-abrasive household soaps or detergents. For ink stains on white surfaces, use Soft Scrub. For scratches and chips, rub with Comet, Ajax, or other mild abrasives. For deeper scratches, use a good grade automotive acrylic-lacquer touch-up paint. Shine with a high grade auto polish. Never use harsh abrasives or steel wool
