Designed by Warren Platner and Harry Bertoia
In the midst of the modern design movement in the 1960s, Warren Platner turned a simple concept -- transforming steel wire into a unique and supremely modern sculptural furniture collection -- into a creative masterpiece: the Platner Table series. This classic table will surely make quite a statement as the focal point of your dining room.

Having worked for Charles and Ray Eames and Hans and Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia garnered icon status as a designer when he created the Bertoia Collection for Knoll in 1952. Italian-born, Bertoia utilized his superior skills as a sculptor to bend and shape industrial wire rods into chairs that would become pinnacles of twentieth century furniture design. Now considered modern classics, the collection was so commercially successful that it allowed Bertoia to dedicate himself exclusively to his main artistic passion: sculpting. His awards include the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects, as well as AIA's Gold Medal.

The Design
Decorative, gentle and graceful, the Platner Dining Table is truly one of a kind. An elegant latecomer to the mid-century modern movement, this table works in virtually limitless settings thanks to a diverse array of tabletop options.

Harry Bertoia's 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including this side chair. Innovative, comfortable, and strikingly handsome, the Bertoia Side Chair's delicate filigree appearance belies its strength and durability. The Bertoia Side Chair's frame is available in Polished or Satin Chrome or six durable powder coat colors, and is offered here with comfortable full upholstery in dozens of quality fabric and leather options.

  • Design Year: 1966
  • Frame made of vertical steel rods welded to circular horizontal and edge-framing rods
  • Nickel base comes with clear lacquer protection
  • Bronze base comes in painted metallic bronze
  • Base features clear plastic extrusion ring for smooth bottom surface
  • Glass top is 3/8"-thick tempered glass
  • Wood tops constructed of veneered medium density fiberboard with cathedral grain pattern
  • Wood tops 1 1/16"-thick with 1/4" solid wood edge
  • Marble tops are 3/4"-thick bevel-edged satin smooth laminate or marble
  • Coated marble tops have transparent polyester coating to help eliminate use-associated stains
  • Natural marble tops and granite tops have protective sealer


  • Please note: coated marble tabletops will yellow over time


Bertoia Chair:

  • Design Year: 1952
    • Welded steel with rods of polished or satin chrome or highly durable outdoor powder coat in six colors
    • Frame is scratch, stain, and chip resistant
    • Stainless steel connections

    • The Knoll logo is stamped into the base of the chair
    • Cover is stretched over wire seat basket and attached with hooks
    • Upholstery is available in over 80 fabric options
