About the Designer
Hungary (1902 - 1981)
Protégé of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer embodied many of the School's distinctive concepts and was and one of the School's most famous students. He returned shortly thereafter to teach carpentry from 1925 to 1928, and during this time designed his tubular-steel furniture collection: functional, simple and distinctly modern. His attention drifted towards architecture, and after practicing privately, he worked as a professor at Harvard's School of Design under Gropius. Breuer was also honored as the first architect to be the sole artist of an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Wassily chair was named after his Bauhaus roommate Wassily Kandinsky.
As a Bauhaus apprentice in 1925, Marcel Breuer conceived the Laccio Table as a companion to his famous Wassily Chair. Tthe simple design of the Laccio is based on the tubed frame of a bicycle. The Design Marcel Breuer's designs stand today as paradigms of 20th Century design. With his innovative use of polished metal and impeccable lines in space, Breuer created a table that is as light visually as it is physically. The seemingly simple design is clearly inspired by the Bauhaus era, giving this table series a truly classic look and feel. Every Laccio Table has an individual number of identification and authenticity as well as the KnollStudio logo and Marcel Breuer's signature stamped into the base of the table.
