About the Designer
Niels Diffrient

Niels Diffrient's designs are grounded in philosophy of form flowing from function. His work has spanned generations, consistently looking past trends to reinvent tools we use for daily living. With an academic foundation in aeronautical engineering and degree from Cranbrook Academy, Diffrient channels his knowledge of fine arts, engineering and architecture into design practice of passion and integrity. His highly functional designs are aesthetically timeless. In his early work with studios of Eero Saarinen, Marco Zanuso, and Henry Dreyfus, to his current work with Humanscale, Diffrient's visionary talent has been widely recognized. Included in his many honors are 2003 National Design Award from Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and 1999 Chrysler Design Award. Most recently he has focused primarily on design for office environment, particularly seating, where he has won many industry awards.

The Freedom chair is designed to give the maximum ergonomic benefit to the sitter with a minimum number of manually-adjusted controls. Once the chair is fitted, no further adjustment is required. The idea is that movement, which is essential for a healthy body, shouldn't be constricted by locking mechanisms and manual controls. In other words, sitting comfortably isn't something you should have to think about. Features

Humanscale Freedom Office Chair with Headrest

 from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

This chair is horribly over-priced. I did not get what I paid for. I do not recommend this chair for two general reasons:
1) very poor value
2) lack of adjustability

* The headrest (which costs a LOT extra) is a total joke. If you're above average height the headrest will interfere with your shoulders and promote bad posture. It's height adjustment is minimal and has no lock so it continually slips back down. I had to tape it in place. When you recline it comes forward automatically and shoves your head forward as if it assumes you want to inspect your belly button. Gee thanks. It was so uncomfortable that I finally got out some tools and removed it, but I'm still stuck with 2 big metal horns protruding above the backrest which threaten to impale my skull if I lean back too far.
* The seat back reclines too easily and there is no tension adjustment for the recline. This is a crucial feature that 99.9999% of office chairs have, and yet they try to use this lack of adjustability as a selling point. Trust me, you need to be able to adjust the recline or you will only have 2 options: most of the way forward or all the way back. Someone should be fired for that decision.
* The lumbar support is not adjustable separately from the backrest. The whole backrest moves up and down which means it really only fits one size of person (a very small person btw) but can accommodate them if they choose to sit on a book or two. The size of the lumbar support is not adjustable at all.
* The arms are too far apart. Presumably the more expensive ones that swivel would fix this, but they might be a rip off like the headrest was.

* Aside from costing lots extra and being too far apart, the arms are great. Their range of height adjustment was a major factor in my choosing this chair, and in this one regard it did not disappoint. The arms can be lowered below your legs almost flush with the seat bottom (so I can play guitar comfortably). The adjustment mechanism is quick and easy to use.
* I splurged on the gel seat bottom. It is very comfortable.
* The seat height range is quite large which I like because I use it for multiple activities that require different heights.
* It's aesthetically pleasing, if that's important to you. I'd rather my chair be adjustable and comfortable.

Don't get me wrong. There are worse chairs out there, but for the price I paid this chair is grossly inadequate. It coasts on style and gimmick without offering the basic features that most people take for granted with even cheap office chairs. I will attempt to sell mine (although I have no hope of recovering anywhere close to the purchase price) so I can purchase a better cheaper chair.

FYI: I am 6'2" and 165lbs
