About the Designer George Nelson United States (1908 - 1986)
George Nelson began his design for what became the Swag Leg Group with the simple desire to create furniture with a sculptured leg. Beyond beauty, he sought practicality, insisting that the legs be made of metal, machine formed and pre-finished. The Nelson Swag Leg Group is a revival of an historic collection by George Nelson. Introduced in 1958, the group's evocative pieces have a look, scale, and function that are simply right for today. These classic, sculpted designs can be used individually or together in the home or office, from meeting spaces to offices and dining areas.
A landmark of modern design that's still turning heads and making people smile, the Marshmallow Sofa illustrates how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. By joining separate elements and making them appear to float on air, designers George Nelson and Irving Harper achieved this sofa's unique appearance and eye-catching appeal. The result is a piece with just the right mix of drama and utility, with cushions available in dozens of fabrics and leather options for the right look in a private office, lobby, lounge, living room, or den. The Design
In designing their 1956 Marshmallow Sofa, Irving Harper and George Nelson exploded the sofa's parts into separate elements. This atom-like appearance, as in the ball clock before it, put elegant emphasis on function to create a pared-down aesthetic. Its cushions like 18 giant marshmallows stuck to a steel frame soften the sofa's curious looks.
When the Marshmallow Sofa was introduced in 1956, the Herman Miller catalog described it as ''The first of a series of pieces embodying a new concept in soft seating. We feel that it has possible use not only in the home, but in contract use for lobbies in public buildings where the very fact that it is unusual will be a plus.''
It was a new concept in soft seating, as the Herman Miller catalog put it, adding that despite its astonishing appearance, this piece is very comfortable.
Designed by Irving Harper and George Nelson, the sofa was reintroduced by Herman Miller after a 34-year hiatus in 1999.
