• In designing their 1956 Marshmallow Sofa, Irving Harper and George Nelson exploded the sofa's parts into separate elements. This atom-like appearance, as in the ball clock before it, put elegant emphasis on function to create a pared-down aesthetic. Its cushions like 18 giant marshmallows stuck to a steel frame soften the sofa's curious looks.
