Design Story
In 1994, Herman Miller turned to renowned designers Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf with the challenge to create a totally new kind of office chair. Chadwick's and Stumpf's previous collaboration had produced the groundbreaking Equa chair, so the two designers began this development process with a clean slate, with no assumptions about function, form or material, but with some strong convictions about what a chair ought to do for a person.
Ergonomically, it ought to do more than just sit there. It should actively intercede for the health of the person who sits in it longer than she should.

Functionally, it ought to move and adjust as simply and naturally as possible. It should support a person in any position he cares to assume, at any task his office job serves up.

Anthropometrically, it ought to be more inclusive than its predecessors. It should do more than accommodate small or large people; it should really fit them.

Environmentally, it ought to be benign. It should be sparing of natural resources, durable and repairable, designed for disassembly and recycling; made largely of recycled materials, the Aeron chair is designed to last a long time, with parts that get the most wear easily replaced and recycled. It's just what you would expect in a well thought-out design.

The design that fulfilled these criteria met all expectations and shattered some of them. It wasn't upholstered. It wasn't padded. It was dimensioned in three models that looked exactly alike and that had nothing to do with their users' job titles. It didn't look like any other office chair. And its revolutionary concept incorporated more patentable ideas than any previous Herman Miller research program.

"It was a matter of deliberate design to create a 'new signature shape'," says designer Bill Stumpf. "Competitive ergonomic chairs became look-alikes. Differentiation was a huge part of the Aeron design strategy, and it remains one of, if not the most, critical aspects of Aeron's success."

With its highly adjustable features, its breathable and supportive Pellicle fabric suspension technology, and its unique back support options, the Aeron accommodates the sitter like no other office chair on the market.

The Aeron Chair remains today one of the most famous designs in the industry. Recognized for its sleek look and innovative modern design, the Aeron has become part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art.

VERY OVERRATED!

Doug from Knoxville, TN

I gave this product 2 stars, not because it's that bad, but reletive to the price and other options out there in the range, it is bad.I do not understand why there is so much hype about this chair; perhaps because it is unique, but unique doesn't mean that it is the best design. I found the Steelcase Think chair after this and immediately returned the Aeron and bought the Think. Problems with the Aeron...The posture fit and lumbar pad are horrible. I tried size B and C chairs and with both of them the top edge of the posture fit annoyingly digs into your back. It is worst when you are reclining. The posture fit works pretty good when you are sitting stright upright, but when you do that there are other problems...When you sit upright in the chair it feels too hard, especially the front edge of the seat. This was the same for all sized I tried, so it's not a size issue. With the Steelcase Think and Leap, they make the chairs with a flexible front edge, which is awesome. The other major issue I had is that when you sit reclined, the arm rests recline with you making for horrible ergonomics if you are typing or using the mouse while reclined, and most people do this. With the Steelcase Think and Leap chairs, when you recline the only thing that reclines is your back so that you can keep the same height and position for your lap and arms in front of the keyboard and mouse. The arms rests move in every direction imaginable so that you can find the perfect position. The Aeron is very durable and heavy, but ergonomically I found it to have many flaws, which the Steelcase chairs did not, so I wouldn't recommend the Aeron and I can't figure out why it is so popular.I was surprised that I didn't find more of these issues mentioned in other reviews, so although I never write reviews, I felt compelled to share this advice since this is such a large purchase for most people.[...] I tried to negotiate this but they wouldn't budge. I recommend finding a local place to try the chairs, even if you have to drive a couple of hours.

Perfect for Petite Person!!

treasureshell from Los Angeles, CA

I am 5'1" and weigh about 105lbs and suffered from chronic shoulder and lower back pain for years due to incorrect posture when sitting in front of my computer at home and at work. Most office chairs available in stores are made for individuals with medium built figure and I've looked for years to find that perfect chair that's made specifically for petite person like me. I finally decided on spending a small fortune buying 2 chairs (one for my hubby) for our home office and I wish I've done it sooner. If I add up all the medical bills I've had from going to my chiropractor and massage sessions throughout the years, I can probably buy 10 of these! I got the Size A which is perfect for my petite body build, I am no longer overreaching to my keyboard or find myself sitting on the edge of the chair because the seat is too "long". My shoulder/back pains have subsided significantly over the last 3 months since using this chair. The lumbar support is also great for my lower back!! I purchased the chairs in February and it worked so well that I just ordered another Size A for my work last week. Wayfair has been great to extend the volume discount on my 3rd Aeron chair. P.S. If you are petite like me and decide to get this chair, you can get a foot rest if you find your feet dangling in air due to desk/chair height.

not perfect, but...

Gennadiy Tokar from Brooklyn, NY– Verified Buyer

I have Steelcase at work (~850 model) so have something to compare to.

Main purpose of this chair is for work from home days where I need to sit 8 hours at the computer.

Would I be extremely satisfied with Aeron for full retail price Nope.

However, open box deal sweetened impact (financial, that is), so I can give solid 4 stars.

Why only 4 As some other reviewers mentioned, there is slight pressure point at the front section of the sit. It can be managed somewhat, but it has to be managed. Not so on Steelcase.

I got non-posturpedic model and my lower back loves it! Didnt try posturpedic model, so cant compare.

Overall, if you have money - Steelcase, while uglier, is more comfy. But for five bills and change this open-box deal is definitely recommend!

Worth Every Penny

Chi-Wing from Boston, MA

This chair has brought comfort to my posterior for many years. It is truly in a class above other chairs. My only complaint is that after a while, a lot of the hardware becomes loose.

Great Office Chair

from Mountain View, CA– Verified Buyer

Bought this for my home office - wish I had done so long ago! Ordering was a snap, delivery was on time, and it was easy to put together. Only small issue was that my box did not include the hex wrench needed but I had one that fit from another purchase.

Love this chair. I was having neck and back problems and this chair really helped. There was some light assembly involved, which took my husband less than 30 min to complete.

About the Designers

Don Chadwick

Don Chadwick United States (1936 - )

In the last few decades, Don Chadwick has pioneered the use of modern materials, moulding processes and mechanisms leading to cutting-edge products that have raised the standard for their market. A native of Southern California, Don Chadwick received his principal training in design at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then worked for architect Victor Gruen before establishing his own practice in 1964. In 1974, Chadwick designed Chadwick Modular Seating. In collaboration with William Stumpf he designed the Equa 1 flexing-plastic chair (1984). Then in 1994, the landmark Aeron chair catapulted Chadwick to national attention, the Industrial Designers Society of America and Business Week Magazine awarded Design of the Decade to the Aeron chair in 1999. Chadwick has received numerous awards over the past three and a half decades. Chadwick's relationship with Knoll marks a milestone in the career of an inventive designer. "I am gratified to be part of the Knoll legacy, I consider Knoll to be at the highest level of contemporary design, and our collaboration is a notable one for me." with the Chadwick chair, he has proven himself as effective at bringing a product to market as he has been at creating the market itself.
