Herman Miller ® Eames Storage Unit

Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" (née Kaiser) Eames (1912–1988) were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.

• Its no accident that this unit, designed in 1950, looks like a Bauhaus structure. Eames, influenced by European modernist architects, took a functional approach that did not disguise or soften the off-the-shelf look of the unit's components. His use of standardized parts and industrial production techniques for making household furniture was unique and a natural extension of the Bauhaus connection between creative design and modern science.
  
  
• A result of work they had done for a 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, these pieces reveal the "machine aesthetic" and Japanese influences important to the Eameses at the time. Long before "modularity" and "high tech" entered the language, Charles and Ray combined standardized parts in many ways to create practical furnishings that suit a variety of uses.
