About the Designer
Charles & Ray Eames Charles & Ray Eames United States

Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" (née Kaiser) Eames (1912–1988) were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.

To create this simple, lightweight table, Charles and Ray Eames applied the same breakthrough technology that led to their invention of the famous molded plywood chairs. The table's round, slightly indented top and gently curved legs are shaped by sandwiching thin wood veneers under heat and pressure. The result is a lean and easily movable piece with the unmistakable Eames look. This coffee table is an ideal complement to the Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chairs and is perfectly sized to add a stylish note to any contemporary living space. The Design: This classic table's top and legs are shaped by molding thin wood veneers under heat and pressure - the same breakthrough process Charles and Ray Eames used to create their molded plywood chairs. The coffee table first came to Herman Miller's attention when George Nelson, design director, saw it and other Eames molded plywood products at a showing in the Barclay Hotel in New York City in the mid-1940s. Nelson contacted the Eameses and soon afterward, they were designing for Herman Miller. , First offered by Herman Miller in 1946, these imaginative tables are an enduring landmark of modern, functional design.

Great look

from Boston, MA– Verified Buyer– Top 50 Reviewer

The look, quality, and wood tone of this coffee table is great. My only complaint would be that the edge raises up slightly, so you can't place a platter on the edge and it is difficult for people to place a drink right on the edge. As long as you are OK with that, this is a great table that looks really sharp.

The low modern silhouette looks great in our condo living room and the round shape is very versatile and welcoming.

Manufacturer Details
Herman Miller: The name is synonymous with innovation, design, operational excellence, smart application of technology, and social responsibility. Herman Miller, Inc. studies work and living environments and designs and delivers products and services that make these environments work better. Through problem-solving research and design, the company seeks to develop innovative solutions to real needs in working, healing, learning, and living environments.

Herman Miller began in 1923 as a manufacturer of traditional residential furniture, became a leader in "modern" furniture in the 1930s and 1940s; developed lasting ties through the 1950s with legendary industrial designers who led the company in new directions; transformed the office furniture industry with the first panel system in the 1960s; invented and refined ergonomic work seating in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; reinvented the geometry of systems furniture in 2000, and is today the second largest office furniture company with customers and locations around the world. Their history of employee participation and ownership and technological innovation has long roots and continues to grow. They have always worked hard to be serious about both people and business. They look at their primary goal as creating great places to work.

George Nelson laid out five tenets of Herman Miller's design philosophy 50 years ago:

  • What you make is important.
  • Design is an integral part of the business.
  • The product must be honest.
  • You decide what you will make.
  • There is a market for good design.

While fashion and style have their place, the main criterion for a Herman Miller product has remained constant: Does it truly solve a problem that people care about in a way that improves upon other solutions, or pioneers a new and better answer altogether? The answer is Yes.
