About the Designer
Charles & Ray Eames Charles & Ray Eames United States

Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" (née Kaiser) Eames (1912–1988) were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.

Designed in 1950, this unique table is one of several modern classics that resulted from the Eameses' experimentation with a mass-production technique for simultaneously welding wires. The Wire-Base Table gave Charles and Ray Eames the perfect place to serve chanoyu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, to special guests such as Isamu Noguchi and Charlie Chaplin. The table proved ideal for such occasions – as stong as koicha (thick tea), as light as usucha (thin tea). Today these light, diminutive tables stand on their own, next to beds and chairs, or on top of each other in a convenient stack. The Design: In the late 1940s, Charles Eames noted all the ''fantastic things being made of wire.'' That fascination led Charles and Ray Eames to develop a mass-production technique for simultaneously welding wire rods. , One result was the Wire-Base Table, which was introduced in 1950. Their work yielded many other breakthrough products--including wire chairs, storage units, and elliptical tables.

Herman Miller ® Eames® Wire-Base Table

Eames Wire Based table

from Union City, CA– Verified Buyer

The table is very small and low to the ground but it was exactly what I was looking for. I needed a low table for a lounge chair for drinks, phone etc. This is perfect. We also have Eames Eiffel dining chairs nearby and I was afraid that all of the wire bases may be too much but they actually complement each other and look great together. As you would expect, the table is well made and is very sturdy.

Classic piece

Great small side table. Check the height because it's very low. For the application we're using it for, it's perfect!

 from Hoboken, NJ– Verified Buyer

We knew that it was a returned item - but 2 of the 4 corners were noticeably banged/dented and not fixable. Also the color is much lighter than in the photo. The discount on the damage wasn't enough to justify the price.

Nice table

 from Rochester, NY– Verified Buyer

Very nice table, great fit and finish, looks good next to my other eames furniture. Expensive for such a small table, but it is worth it.

Manufacturer Details
Herman Miller: The name is synonymous with innovation, design, operational excellence, smart application of technology, and social responsibility. Herman Miller, Inc. studies work and living environments and designs and delivers products and services that make these environments work better. Through problem-solving research and design, the company seeks to develop innovative solutions to real needs in working, healing, learning, and living environments.

Herman Miller began in 1923 as a manufacturer of traditional residential furniture, became a leader in "modern" furniture in the 1930s and 1940s; developed lasting ties through the 1950s with legendary industrial designers who led the company in new directions; transformed the office furniture industry with the first panel system in the 1960s; invented and refined ergonomic work seating in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; reinvented the geometry of systems furniture in 2000, and is today the second largest office furniture company with customers and locations around the world. Their history of employee participation and ownership and technological innovation has long roots and continues to grow. They have always worked hard to be serious about both people and business. They look at their primary goal as creating great places to work.

George Nelson laid out five tenets of Herman Miller's design philosophy 50 years ago:

  • What you make is important.
  • Design is an integral part of the business.
  • The product must be honest.
  • You decide what you will make.
  • There is a market for good design.

While fashion and style have their place, the main criterion for a Herman Miller product has remained constant: Does it truly solve a problem that people care about in a way that improves upon other solutions, or pioneers a new and better answer altogether? The answer is Yes.
