About the Designers
Don Chadwick Don Chadwick United States (1936 - )

In the last few decades, Don Chadwick has pioneered the use of modern materials, moulding processes and mechanisms leading to cutting-edge products that have raised the standard for their market. A native of Southern California, Don Chadwick received his principal training in design at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then worked for architect Victor Gruen before establishing his own practice in 1964. In 1974, Chadwick designed Chadwick Modular Seating. In collaboration with William Stumpf he designed the Equa 1 flexing-plastic chair (1984). Then in 1994, the landmark Aeron chair catapulted Chadwick to national attention, the Industrial Designers Society of America and Business Week Magazine awarded Design of the Decade to the Aeron chair in 1999. Chadwick has received numerous awards over the past three and a half decades. Chadwick's relationship with Knoll marks a milestone in the career of an inventive designer. "I am gratified to be part of the Knoll legacy, I consider Knoll to be at the highest level of contemporary design, and our collaboration is a notable one for me." with the Chadwick chair, he has proven himself as effective at bringing a product to market as he has been at creating the market itself.

Bill Stumpf Bill Stumpf

The design that fulfilled these criteria met all expectations and shattered some of them. It wasn't upholstered. It wasn't padded. It was dimensioned in three models that looked exactly alike and that had nothing to do with their users' job titles. It didn't look like any other office chair. And its revolutionary concept incorporated more patentable ideas than any previous Herman Miller research program."It was a matter of deliberate design to create a 'new signature shape',"says designer Bill Stumpf. "Competitive ergonomic chairs became look-alikes. Differentiation was a huge part of the Aeron design strategy, and it remains one of, if not the most, critical aspects of Aeron's success."With its highly adjustable features, its breathable and supportive Pellicle fabric suspension technology, and its unique back support options, the Aeron accommodates the sitter like no other office chair on the market.

Combining distinctive looks with pioneering ergonomics, Aeron performs like no other chair. Adaptable to all sizes and shapes and all the motions you go through every day while seated, Aeron provides healthy comfort and balanced body support with its innovative suspension and easy-to-use adjustment controls.

Design Story
In 1994, Herman Miller turned to renowned designers Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf with the challenge to create a totally new kind of office chair. Chadwick's and Stumpf's previous collaboration had produced the groundbreaking Equa chair, so the two designers began this development process with a clean slate, with no assumptions about function, form or material, but with some strong convictions about what a chair ought to do for a person.
Ergonomically, it ought to do more than just sit there. It should actively intercede for the health of the person who sits in it longer than she should.

Functionally, it ought to move and adjust as simply and naturally as possible. It should support a person in any position he cares to assume, at any task his office job serves up.

Anthropometrically, it ought to be more inclusive than its predecessors. It should do more than accommodate small or large people; it should really fit them.

Environmentally, it ought to be benign. It should be sparing of natural resources, durable and repairable, designed for disassembly and recycling; made largely of recycled materials, the Aeron chair is designed to last a long time, with parts that get the most wear easily replaced and recycled. It's just what you would expect in a well thought-out design.

The design that fulfilled these criteria met all expectations and shattered some of them. It wasn't upholstered. It wasn't padded. It was dimensioned in three models that looked exactly alike and that had nothing to do with their users' job titles. It didn't look like any other office chair. And its revolutionary concept incorporated more patentable ideas than any previous Herman Miller research program.

"It was a matter of deliberate design to create a 'new signature shape'," says designer Bill Stumpf. "Competitive ergonomic chairs became look-alikes. Differentiation was a huge part of the Aeron design strategy, and it remains one of, if not the most, critical aspects of Aeron's success."

With its highly adjustable features, its breathable and supportive Pellicle fabric suspension technology, and its unique back support options, the Aeron accommodates the sitter like no other office chair on the market.

The Aeron Chair remains today one of the most famous designs in the industry. Recognized for its sleek look and innovative modern design, the Aeron has become part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art.

The most comfortable chair!!!

 from Miami, FL– Verified Buyer

I have bought three of these chairs. I love that you don't get hot because of the mesh and that it is super supportive on your back, leg and knees. Can be easily adjusted and well worth the price for comfort. Also look beautiful in the office.

Perfect gift for your guy!

from Bainbridge Island, WA– Verified Buyer

It was the perfect Christmas gift for my now-retired husband. It provides great back support (without all of the bells and whistles of the more expensive model) and encourages good posture even at the computer. He loves it! Better yet, even a mechanically-challenged person like me can assemble it.

Saving my back

 from INDIANAPOLIS, IN– Verified Buyer

For years I purchased rolling office chairs hoping to feel good after sitting in front of a desk all day. Finally I decided to get an Aeron Chair. In fact it is so comfortable, I bought two. My sister on trying the chair in my home bought three for her and her husband. Extremely happy with this purchase.

Very good chair

 from Russian Federation– Verified Buyer

This chair was too expensive in my city, so I had to order it directly from USA. AllModern's managers were very pleasant while answering all my questions about choosing the correct configuration, making an order and shipping. I have read a lot about HM's products on retail sites and forums, and I think my choice is right. The chair is really comfortable.

Thanks to AllModern!

Good investment

 from Meriden, NH– Verified Buyer

My Aeron chair did not disappoint. I made the investment for my home office, knowing that I was investing in injury prevention. Compared to downtime from injury and the cost of physcial therapy, it's inexpensive! I got an open-box special and went with the Basic Aeron. Only adjustment is height. So far, that seems to be the only adjustment feature I really need. It has become the most popular chair in the household! Now to bring the rest of my office up to the same ergonomic standard.

Manufacturer Details
Herman Miller: The name is synonymous with innovation, design, operational excellence, smart application of technology, and social responsibility. Herman Miller, Inc. studies work and living environments and designs and delivers products and services that make these environments work better. Through problem-solving research and design, the company seeks to develop innovative solutions to real needs in working, healing, learning, and living environments.

Herman Miller began in 1923 as a manufacturer of traditional residential furniture, became a leader in "modern" furniture in the 1930s and 1940s; developed lasting ties through the 1950s with legendary industrial designers who led the company in new directions; transformed the office furniture industry with the first panel system in the 1960s; invented and refined ergonomic work seating in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; reinvented the geometry of systems furniture in 2000, and is today the second largest office furniture company with customers and locations around the world. Their history of employee participation and ownership and technological innovation has long roots and continues to grow. They have always worked hard to be serious about both people and business. They look at their primary goal as creating great places to work.

George Nelson laid out five tenets of Herman Miller's design philosophy 50 years ago:

  • What you make is important.
  • Design is an integral part of the business.
  • The product must be honest.
  • You decide what you will make.
  • There is a market for good design.

While fashion and style have their place, the main criterion for a Herman Miller product has remained constant: Does it truly solve a problem that people care about in a way that improves upon other solutions, or pioneers a new and better answer altogether? The answer is Yes.
