Table Designed by George Nelson
George Nelson began his design for what became the Swag Leg Group with the simple desire to create furniture with a sculptured leg. Beyond beauty, he sought practicality, insisting that the legs be made of metal, machine formed and pre-finished.

The Nelson Swag Leg Group is a revival of an historic collection by George Nelson. Introduced in 1958, the group's evocative pieces have a look, scale, and function that are simply right for today. These classic, sculpted designs can be used individually or together in the home or office, from meeting spaces to offices and dining areas.

Chairs Designed by Charles and Ray Eames
The George Nelson Swag Leg Table is available here with the Eames Molded Plywood Chairs. Experimenting in the 1940s with thin sheets of wood veneer formed under heat and pressure, Charles and Ray Eames adapted this new technology to furniture making.

Sculpting a seat and back to fit the contours of the human body, they designed a truly comfortable chair that’s suitable for businesses and homes. It’s an achievement others have noticed — Time Magazine named it the Best Design of the 20th Century.

THE DESIGN | FEATURES AT A GLANCE | DIMENSIONS | WHY BUY FROM US?

The Design:

  • With his Swag Leg Group, George Nelson didn't try to design an innovation; the innovation resulted from his criteria for the design. He began with the legs, insisting that they be made of metal, machine formed, and pre-finished. He also wanted them to be easy for the consumer to assemble, so the desk and tables could ship knocked down to save on costs.

  • "Swaging" - using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube - proved to be the best way to produce Nelson's legs, which are made of 16-gauge steel and have adjustable glides. Solid walnut stretchers that bolt onto the legs were added for a stable, durable base that is common to both the Swag Desk and Tables.

  • In the early 1940s, when Charles Eames was working on MGM set designs, he would return to the small apartment where he and his wife, Ray, were experimenting with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the U.S. Navy in 1942 to develop plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells molded under heat and pressure.

  • After World War II, they adapted the technology to create inexpensive, high-quality chairs that could be mass-produced. The process eliminated the extraneous wood needed to connect the seat with the back, which reduced the weight and visual profile of the chair and established a basis for modern furniture design. The chair is in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Herman Miller ®:

Herman Miller ® Herman Miller: The name is synonymous with innovation, design, operational excellence, smart application of technology, and social responsibility. Herman Miller, Inc. studies work and living environments and designs and delivers products and services that make these environments work better. Through problem-solving research and design, the company seeks to develop innovative solutions to real needs in working, healing, learning, and living environments.

Herman Miller began in 1923 as a manufacturer of traditional residential furniture, became a leader in "modern" furniture in the 1930s and 1940s; developed lasting ties through the 1950s with legendary industrial designers who led the company in new directions; transformed the office furniture industry with the first panel system in the 1960s; invented and refined ergonomic work seating in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; reinvented the geometry of systems furniture in 2000, and is today the second largest office furniture company with customers and locations around the world. Their history of employee participation and ownership and technological innovation has long roots and continues to grow. They have always worked hard to be serious about both people and business. They look at their primary goal as creating great places to work.

George Nelson laid out five tenets of Herman Miller's design philosophy 50 years ago:

  • What you make is important.
  • Design is an integral part of the business.
  • The product must be honest.
  • You decide what you will make.
  • There is a market for good design.

While fashion and style have their place, the main criterion for a Herman Miller product has remained constant: Does it truly solve a problem that people care about in a way that improves upon other solutions, or pioneers a new and better answer altogether? The answer is Yes. More on Herman Miller ®...
