These chairs are stunning, although they are much darker as other reviewers have mentioned. I have both the Emily table and the chairs, and it is a solid, solid set. If you Google finish colors, the color of these chairs looks closest to "medium oak" or "red oak" in my opinion. Depending on the lighting it looks either medium chestnut brown, or in the light a mahogany like oak color with red hues. I am actually relieved that they aren't gold since I was unsure of that color.
Regarding assembly, it is true that it is kind of complicated. The angles are what makes it difficult--getting it lined up to tighten the bolts. You have to make the chair frame first with the seat supports to connect the legs, then place the seat on and bolt it down. We got these chairs up in about 15 min each using a power drill (my husband is skilled at assembly, so I'm not sure if this is an atypical result), but without that I imagine it would easily double per chair. Because they went up fast, I commented that others weren't keen on assembly and wondered why, but he said that out of our furniture, these were a bit trickier and 'cumbersome.'
Once together though, they are VERY sturdy. We've had many guest that would pass the average "250 lbs" weight limit and haven't had any reservations about them sitting on them. Compared to our parsons chairs at the end, they don't rock, flex, etc. Bolts have stayed tight after 3 months of use. A+ in my book.
