About the Designer

Gio Ponti

Gio Ponti Italy (1891 - )

Gio Ponti was born in Milan the year 1891, obtaining his degree in architecture from the "Politecnico" University of Milan in 1920 and he started working in the architectural design office headed by Mino Fiocchi ed Emilio Lancia. Since the beginning of his career, Gio Ponti succeeded in melting paintings and architecture. In addition, he has worked in the graphics and scenic design fields. He has collaborated with many artists such as Massimo Campigli, Piero Fornasetti and Pietro Chiesa. From 1923 to 1930 Gio Ponti was Richard Ginori's artistic director where he has designed many series of china collections. In the field of design his popular furniture designs include Lamp and all the objects designs for FontanaArte and among these the Ultraleggeara chair and the furniture designed for Cassina, the silverwear for Christofle and the china for Rechard-Ginori. From 1936 to 1961 he taught at the "Politecnico" University of Milan. Gio Ponti died in 1979. Among his pieces designed for FontanaArte, and still produced today, are the Lamp 0024, Bilia, Pirellina, Pirellone and the Tavolino 1932 table.

About the Manufacturer

Architect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte in 1932 as an artistic division in the company Luigi Fontana, historically, the company leader in advanced glass manufacturing and design.

The designs were first distinguished by their realization of the artistic stained-glass windows, many of which are today still functional elements and ornamental in churches and cathedrals, among the Duomo of Milan and the cathedral of Brasilia. By using glass, architect Ponti realized what an enormous potential this material could offer in the making of furnishing complements for interiors.

Urged by this intuition he started to design and produce furniture, lamps, and objects with glass as the main distinguishing feature. In a short time a new collection was ready to be marketed, and his new design concept was being used as a complement to the interior decoration of many houses that he personally designed.

FontanaArte is certified as per regulation ISO 9001:2000. All designs, developing, production and sale of lighting appliances, furnishing accessories, and merchandising observe the regulation UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 for the best quality and to achieve first class customer satisfaction.

FontanaArte's fame, linked to glass and design, continues to grow thanks to the interpretations of Gio Ponti and the insightful collaboration of Pietro Chiesa.
