Produced through Coopa-Roca, a women’s cooperative based in Rio de Janeiro’s largest shantytown, employing humanitarian values and artisan production methods consistent with Artecnica’s Design With Conscience campaign. By using their homes as workshops, cooperative members earn a living while tending to their children and other domestic responsibilities. In addition to extending livelihood opportunities, Coopa-Roca’s commitment to world-class craftwork has enhanced the self-esteem of women in this impoverished neighborhood.

As Artecnica grew, the reward of pure visual excitement was joined by intense commitment to design. They then started traveling the world, where they began exploring and sharing experiences. Specialized vendors were selected and collaborations with designers, merchants and craftsmen had begun. This allowed Artecnica to explore new materials experimentally and spontaneously.

Artecnica promotes, directs, and sponsors collaborative exchanges between leading designers and artisan communities to create meaningful design that challenges people to adopt a deeper, more sensitive way of thinking about objects.
