Adelta Eero Aarnio Bubble Lounge Chair

Born in 1932, acclaimed Finnish designer Eero Aarnio changed the face of industrial design through his groundbreaking use of plastic. An expansion upon the Ball Chair, the Bubble Chair is one of Aarnio's most well-known designs and is a triumph of minimalism. However, it's simple, uncluttered aesthetic belies the painstaking planning and design process that Aarnio used to bring it into being. At once nostalgic and futuristic, the Bubble Chair is a landmark design achievement that instantly becomes the lynchpin of any environment it occupies.

The Design:

• As its appearance hints, the Bubble Chair developed as an offshoot of the Ball Chair. Aarnio explained his process: "After I had made the Ball Chair I wanted to have light inside it and so I had the idea of a transparent ball where light comes from all directions. The only suitable material is acrylic which is heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble. Since I knew that dome-shaped skylights are made in this way, I contacted the manufacturer and asked if it would be technically possible to blow a bubble that is bigger than a hemisphere. The answer was yes. I had a steel ring made, the bubble was blown, cushions were added and the chair was ready. And again the name was obvious: BUBBLE."



• One major difference between the Ball Chair and the Bubble Chair is the transparency of the latter, creating less of a barrier between the person sitting in the chair and the outside surroundings. However, the Bubble Chair is similar to its predecessor in that it creates an atmosphere of complete coziness, and it diffuses outside sounds to encourage deep relaxation.



• The Bubble Chair suspends the user above the ground at a length determined by its owner, and is designed to do so in either an indoor or outdoor setting. A chromed steel ring allows the chair to be suspended in any interior environment, while an outdoor-specific stainless steel ring is available to let you add an ethereal highlight to your front porch or backyard.
