No stranger to the AllModern audience — American potter, designer, and author, Jonathan Adler, is undoubtedly a master of his craft. Perhaps no other artist boasts such a keen eye for pattern and color while remaining true to his original tool— a simple potter's wheel. Our editors sat down with the design titan to get an inside look at the inspiration behind his latest works, the creative process, and what he cherishes most.

1. Over the course of your career, you've expanded from pottery to a full home décor line. What are you most excited to try next?

Everything! The best part of my job is being able to make whatever I can think of. I'd love to design a car, inside and out.

2. What originally drew you to pottery? Has your relationship with it changed over time?

I first tried pottery at summer camp because I thought the instructor was cute. The moment I touched clay I felt a connection. Pottery is still the foundation of everything I do.

3. What does the creative process look like when you're bringing an idea to life?

It's a lot of blood, sweat, tears; and endless rounds of sample revision to get a piece just the way I want it. I work out my ideas in the pottery studio and then work with our design team to translate the model into something that can actually be produced by our workshops around the world. It takes about a year for something to go from idea to reality.

4. We're swooning over your newest pieces for fall. What inspired your latest designs?

One part jet-set-meets-Jackie-O-in-Paris, one part chic chalet, one part ultra-futuristic, and all glamorous. I want to make things that make you feel even more eccentric and glamorous than you already are.

5. Your vases are timeless, yet modern. What's your favorite way to style them?

I'm a minimalist designer, but a maximalist decorator, so I like to pile 'em together.

6. We hear you are a superb entertainer — what's the most important thing to keep in mind when throwing a stylish soirée?

Good food and lights on dimmers. People will be satiated, while looking young and appealing.

7. Describe the piece in your home you couldn't live without.

My hubby, Simon, and our dog, Foxylady. The rest are just things.

8. As a creative mind, how do you balance your art with your ever-growing business?

I'm fortunate to have a president who can worry about the business side of things while I worry about the design side. We're the perfect pair.9. Just for fun — what does your perfect day off look like?

9. Just for fun — what does your perfect day off look like?

My perfect day starts with a civilized breakfast at home with a passel of newspapers before I head off to the gym. Then I'd go to the office to work on new designs. Perhaps I'd squeeze in some window shopping at the antique stores by my house in Greenwich Village — they're some of the best in the world — and then I'd have roast chicken and apple pie for dinner with Simon. Finally, I'd play a game of Ping-Pong with Simon in my living room — and I'd win.

10. What three words would you use to describe the Jonathan Adler brand?

Modern. American. Glamour.

Bonus: Do you have any tips for staying positive when things don't go as planned?

Part of being a potter is opening the door to the kiln only to find a piece you've slaved over has exploded during firing. It's good practice to learn to let things go. There's nothing to do but try again.
