respondé is a modern sustainable furnishings company. Started as a source for responsible furnishings, respondé produces and curates an attractive collection of handsomely crafted, modern, durable furnishings that are safe and sensitive to the environment.
The concept for respondé was born in 2011, when Christy Everett, founder of respondé, attended the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, ICFF. She noticed a few designers making sustainable lighting or tables, but none were offering a collection of furniture. With that observation, she took on the challenge to create a single source of responsibly designed furnishings, catering to commercial and residential architects, designers and end users.
As the process began, it became obvious that identifying sustainable furniture in the marketplace is a complicated negotiation. For instance a piece may contain reclaimed wood but use finishes high in VOCs. The goal for respondé is not just to offer furnishings that have a recyclable component, or use an environmentally friendly material but instead to offer furnishings as responsible as possible.
As the search continued, a catalogue of sustainable materials developed. Christy applied her five years of manufacturing experience and respondé started in-house production in October 2012. Today, in addition to curating, respondé is creating clean modern, indoor and indoor/outdoor furnishings using bamboo, recycled plastic, reclaimed wood, and recycled aluminum. Wood pieces are finished with durable natural finishes -- that may dry in 2 hours, instead of 30 minutes -- but respondé believes that good indoor air quality is worth the wait.
For respondé, sustainable furnishings must be attractive, durable and safe, crafted with materials and processes sensitive to the environment. All furnishings in the collection merit LEED credits for aspects including: reclaimed, renewable and recyclable materials, low emissions and energy efficiency. respondé is responsible design.
