Awesome. Just awesome. from Alexandria, VA on 10/30/2014 – Verified Buyer
We ordered three of these kits and loved the results so much that we ordered more. Monorail lighting does great things:

- Frees you from restrictions of lamps and conventional ceiling/wall lights

- Lets you get as creative as you want

- Serves as a focal point for your home decor

- Allows you to add small or big amounts of light for work, relaxation, entertaining, and displaying your favorite possessions

The big question: Could we homeowners install this system without an electrician? One of us has worked extensively with the wiring in our home--no problem there. The biggest challenge was designing each run. Straight runs are not too difficult. If you design an organic shape and will bend your own rail, take time to plan. We designed our long curved run on the floor, with a 30-foot cloth tape measure. For accurate installation, we laid out the track on the floor, and then used a laser plumb bob to pinpoint placement of transformers and rigid standoffs on the ceiling--very helpful.

It took a couple of hours for us to install our first (short, straight) monorail run, but it was fun, and a pleasure to work with such high-quality monorail and fixtures. LBL installation guides are well written and illustrated, and available on their website.

Our system is surface mounted electronic, with xenon and halogen fixtures. Monorail lighting brands can't be combined, and we loved LBL's selection of pendants and heads. (If you want to mix LEDs with xenon/halogen, you'll need to buy the LBL two-circuit monorail.) Wayfair/AllModern sells the whole product line, and will answer questions.

To join several 250-watt kits into one long run, use the LBL isolating connector. The result: subtle drama on the ceiling.

LBL recommends Lutron dimmers. Since this kit supports 250 watts, we chose the Lutron Diva dimmer, 300-watt capacity, designed for low-voltage lighting systems with electronic transformers. (At this writing, Wayfair does not sell the Lutron Diva dimmer, but it was not hard to find.) Dimmers add flexibility to your lighting, and they conserve energy and extend bulb life.

I would absolutely recommend the LBL monorail kit to a friend, especially to an experienced DIYer or somebody willing to hire an electrician. Yes, DIYers, you can do this!
