Part of our seventh series of City Plates, this collection highlights creative capitals. Rio de Janeiro, Austin, Copenhagen, and Tel Aviv are all making a name for themselves as meccas of innovation in the arts and sciences. Each is renowned for creative expression and experimentation in the forms of dance, music, film, cuisine and technology. As culture and creativity become recognized as driving forces in this global economy, how will this inform future urban agendas?
Rio de Janeiro - Home of Carnival and the samba, and host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio has put itself front and center on the world stage. Already one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere, Rio has breathtaking landscapes, including sun-drenched beaches and its infamous favelas. With the help of government funding and corporate tax rebates, Rio is now promoting its image as a world-class art destination, launching numerous fine art, performing art, and cultural initiatives including the contemporary art fair, ArtRio, as well as galleries and museums.
The City Plates measure 12” across. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green.
