"Architecture is a language; when you are very good you can be a poet," wrote acclaimed designer and Bauhaus director Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Mies van der Rohe began his career working in his father's stonemasonry business. After an apprenticeship in Berlin, he started his own office in Berlin before immigrating to the United States in 1938 and settling in Chicago.
