Max Bill (22 December 1908 - 9 December 1994). Bill was born in Winterthur. After an apprenticeship as a silversmith during 1924-1927, Bill took up studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau under many teachers including Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer from 1927 to 1929, after which he moved to Zurich. Max Bill designed some very successful clock and watch faces for Junghans, a German timepiece manufacturer in business since 1861.

The Tables en forme , first designed by Charlotte Perriand in the thirties, were popular in the kidney-shaped variety during the fifties. Next to the free forms of almost all known examples, the 1949/50-designed Dining Table by Max Bill appears neat and precise. The structure, consisting of three circles, defines its geometric shape. The Dining Table designed for both low and high models represents a high point in Max Bill's campaign for design reform.
