Meet the Designer

Vitra Vitra Design Museum 9.75" Asterisk Wall Clock

With the diversity of materials used and their sculptural shapes, clocks embody the joie de vivre of the 1950s. To this day, his wall clocks remain a refreshing alternative to the usual timekeepers. The Vitra Design Museum presents a re-edition of the designs so cherished by collectors - in a true-to-the-original form.

Features:

  • Includes battery
  • Material: lacquered wood and metal
  • High-grade quartz clockwork
  • Design: Design is the process by which almost all objects in Vitra's surroundings are instilled with a specific design and function - from cars to paper clips, from clothing to chairs. And design does not just mean giving things a shape. Design creates the basis which enables things to function in the desired manner. It is a process in which complementary but often mutually contradictory requirements have to be met (comfort, technology, ergonomics, ecology, economics, aesthetics). Design can be successful only when the balance of all these factors is attained
  • Quality: Once in the factory, Vitra staff manufacture furniture to precise standards, individually ensuring the quality of each product
  • Quality: Vitra has been certified for DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000
  • Quality: Vitra's focus on quality does not end at the factory door - they believe that providing clients with exceptional service is just as important as manufacturing furniture. In order to make certain Vitra clients enjoy consistently high quality in all Vitra products, they have set up their own test center which monitors products against criteria that are far more stringent than the statutory standards
  • Ergonomics: Ergonomics is an applied science that studies the relationship between human beings and machines. Vitra produces furniture that responds to the ergonomic requirements of the body and as a consequence has a positive effect on health and well-being. All Vitra products (except for the experimental series Vitra Edition) have been tested by independent institutions. They comply with prescribed standards under the European Directive on VDU Work and are marked with the GS seal (= Geprüfte Sicherheit or Tested Safety, seal of the independent certification company LGA)
  • Ecology: Vitra's contribution to ecological conservation does not stop with a close examination of materials and processes. All aspects of the company's work involve ecological thinking
  • Ecology: In 1991, Vitra set up an internal ecology committee to discuss environmental topics. This team identifies new tasks, and its project team's work together to find solutions
  • Ecology: Vitra uses only non-CFC foams and adhesives free of toxic solvents; all possible materials are recycled. Wherever possible, Vitra uses recycled materials
  • Ecology: Vitra's goal during production is to minimize noise and emission levels as well as to reduce waste. Packaging materials are kept to a minimum and re-used as often as possible

Maki from Honolulu, HI– Verified Buyer

I love these clocks. I have a few more VITRA clocks all around the house - and, they work well with the retro-modern look of house. They are made of metal, and are heavier than your usual platic clocks.

The balance on the clock is strange. Instructions on how to hang the clock would have been helpful. I broke a hand on the clock trying to hang it. totally unhappy. [$] down the tubes.

About the Designer

George Nelson

George Nelson United States (1908 - 1986)

George Nelson began his design for what became the Swag Leg Group with the simple desire to create furniture with a sculptured leg. Beyond beauty, he sought practicality, insisting that the legs be made of metal, machine formed and pre-finished. The Nelson Swag Leg Group is a revival of an historic collection by George Nelson. Introduced in 1958, the group's evocative pieces have a look, scale, and function that are simply right for today. These classic, sculpted designs can be used individually or together in the home or office, from meeting spaces to offices and dining areas.

About the Manufacturer

Founded in Weil am Rhein, Germany, in 1950 by Willi Fehlbaum, Vitra has been the retailer of the works of many internationally renowned furniture designers. Throughout those 50 years Vitra has had one goal: to make the place of work as appealing, productive, and healthy as possible. Vitra furniture can be found in countless successful companies and organizations, as well as in the homes of many private individuals with an affinity for design.

Convinced that rooms and interior design have a decisive influence on people's motivation, performance, and health, Vitra has made it their mission to develop furniture and furnishing systems that stimulate, inspire, and motivate, while also offering the body comfort, safety, and support. In order to attain this goal, Vitra has worked with their specialized team and renowned designers. Over the years, Vitra has exemplified that they are not afraid to experiment with new and bold ideas and eagerly anticipate and look forward to facing the new challenges of the world of work.

Vitra is vigorously persistent in creating products of the highest quality. Once in the factory, the Vitra staff manufactures the furniture to precise standards, individually ensuring the quality of each product. The focus on quality does not end at the factory door. Providing clients with premier service is just as important as manufacturing furniture. In order to further ensure the high quality in all Vitra products, Vitra has set up their own test center which monitors products against criteria that are far more stringent than the statutory standards.
