OXO was founded in 1990 on the philosophy of Universal Design, which is the concept of designing products that are easy to use for the largest possible spectrum of users. Living by Universal Design principles gives the OXO's designers an opportunity to see things from a different perspective.
The OXO Good Grips line has been recognized by several national and international organizations for superior design and today is regarded as one of the icons of Universal Design.
The goal of making products more usable forces OXO's product designers to first identify problems and inefficiencies of existing products (including their own), not only in terms of comfort, but performance as well. This gives them the foundation to meet their commitment of making only products that offer tangible improvements. Each year, OXO introduces more than 50 products. Many of these products take more than two years to develop. In fact, a few of the products never make it to the market because they fail to meet the OXO criteria.
The line has grown to more than 500 innovative products covering many areas of the home. Since founder Sam Farber sold the company and retired from OXO in 1995, the company was purchased in 1999 by World Kitchen, Inc., a housewares company based in Reston, Virginia, and then again in 2004 by Helen of Troy Limited. Today, OXO continues to be focused on creating innovative solutions for problems that users experience in their everyday tasks.
