About the Designer
Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen Finland (1910 - 1961)

Eero Saarinen shared the same birthday as his father, Eliel Saarinen. They emigrated to the United States of America in 1923, when Eero was thirteen. He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where his father was a teacher at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and he took courses in sculpture and furniture design there. He had a close relationship with fellow students Charles and Ray Eames, and became good friends with Florence Knoll (née Schust). Beginning in September 1929, he studied sculpture at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Architecture, completing his studies in 1934. Subsequently, he toured Europe and North Africa for a year and returned for a year to his native Finland, after which he returned to Cranbrook to work for his father and teach at the academy. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1940. Saarinen was recruited by Donal McLaughlin, an architectural school friend from his Yale days, to join the military service in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Saarinen was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. Saarinen worked full time for the OSS until 1944. After his father's death in 1950, Saarinen founded his own architect's office, "Eero Saarinen and Associates". Eero Saarinen died of a brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51

"The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world," said esteemed Finnish designer Eero Saarinen. "I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." Thus in 1957 Saarinen unveiled his ground-breaking collection of pedestal coffee, dining and side tables, whose simple elegance has endured for 50 years. Stylish and modern, the Saarinen Oval Dining Table is a design masterpiece that fits seamlessly into any environment.

The Design
Eero Saarinen might be considered by some to be a purist when it came to his approach towards architecture and interior design. He sought the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution within an overall unity of design. When he designed his pedestal collection, including the Oval Dining Table, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture from the past has a holistic structure." To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Saarinen's revolutionary Tulip Collection, Knoll has introduced a platinum finish option and has reintroduced teak and rosewood tabletop finishes.

Knoll ® Saarinen Dining Table with Tulip Chairs

The best product

Gisela from Hollywood, FL– Verified Buyer

Not for nothing it's been popular since 1957, the only one legged table that is stable even if you lean yourself against its edge. I absolutely adore it. I also have a sentimental thing for this table, my beloved stepmom used to have it in her house while dating my father and we would have lunch every Wednesday on this amazing table that in addition fits the amount of people you desire because of being one legged. Bravo Saarinen!!!

Love this Table!

Nitfarb from Weddington, NC– Verified Buyer

I have been considering this table for a long time. Had concerns about sturdiness and stability. Also price with so many less expensive versions available. Finally went with the true reproduction by Knoll. Couldn't be happier! It is very well made, assembles quickly and easily (I did it myself in 15 min), and it is very sturdy. So glad I took the plunge. Now on to some beautiful chairs.

I ordered this as a conference table for my design studio. It is perfect: great design, and solid as a rock. Truly a classic.
