About the Designer
Christophe Mathieu Germany (1961 - )
Born in Hamburg in 1961, he graduated in Interior Design from the School of Applied Art and Artistic Trades (la Llotja), in Barcelona, having been on placement in Hamburg collaborating with Nitz, Prash and Sigl Architects. Subsequently, he lived for three years in Milan, where he collaborated with: the architect Marco Zanuso Jr. in the development of products for companies such as De Padova, Menphis and Driade; the architects Roberto Menghi y Giulio Crespi; the industrial designer Sergio Coppola and the architect Antonio Zanuso in the prize-winning project for the Piazza della Republica. His time in Milan had a profound effect on him. In 1989, he decided to move to Barcelona where he collaborated with Alfredo Arribas, Eduard Samsó and Javier Mariscal. Companies with which he has worked are: Bosa, Artelano, Disform, Metalarte, Bover, Chupa-Chups, Smint, Nike, Bticino, Comas & Partners y Marset.
Youthful exuberance. A passion for design, technology and innovation. A soupçon of patience. Every family within the Marset USA collection is shaped by these elements, and its Studio 54-inspired Discocó is no exception. Rather, it’s simply exceptional—a pendant composed of 35 lacquered ABS discs surrounding a shimmering core, reflecting and redirecting light onto its underlying leaves. First imagined by Barcelona-based designer Christophe Mathieu in 1997, his sketches merged opaque layers with Caravaggio-style shadowplay and futuristic lines. During the next few years, Mathieu revisited his idea until the optimal manufacturing solution was ready to bring his idea to fruition. In 2008, Marset USA introduced Discocó with its iconic glittering white discs. Not one to stop at perfection, Mathieu continues to reinvent his luminaire; Discocó is now available in four sizes and a variety of finishes, including turquoise, chocolate and sand.
