lava – an Italian word meaning “a sudden stream” was aptly named by those living closest to Mount Vesuvius. The Neapolitans applied it to the streams of molten rock flowing down the sides of the active volcano. Mount Vesuvius has erupted frequently since Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried in it in A.D. 79. As basalts continue to erupt under water, geologists see pillows formed as lava enters the sea. Pillows of lava are formed when eruptions of hot rock flow into distinctive creations and are quickly frozen by cool seawater. lavaTM pillows are modern, vibrant, and fresh. Created for American Mills, Inc. by Alisa Shapard.
