About the Designer
Kjell Engman Kjell Engman

In the Scandinavian tradition, Kjell Engman is a born weaver of magic tales, a conjurer of times past and of wonders of the mind's eye. His narrative talents came naturally, learned from sources as diverse as Nordic myth and his yarn-spinning grandmother. Trained as a painter, ceramicist, and glass artist, Kjell joined us in 1978, after art school in Goteburg and the National College of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm. In 1981, he took a sabbatical to study at the Pilchuck Art Center in Washington state. Kjell is a tirelessly productive artist with a free-ranging imagination and a passion for storytelling, whose creativity finds expression in utilitarian as well as art glass. He lists among other sources of inspiration, the animal kingdom and the worlds of music and entertainment (check out his delightful 'Twister” series). Kjell often works on large installations, which include elements of sound and light. He is frequently commissioned for public works in Sweden and abroad and has a large number and wide range of pieces in the Kosta Boda collection.

Hand-blown Bali is in the vein of Kjell's beautiful Tobago and Fidji collections, all of which are inspired by the colors and sensual forms of tropical locales. In their near-mystical treatment of these colors and forms, Kjell and The Manufacture's master glassmakers have created another Kosta Boda classic. The delightful Blue Vase gives Bali signature appeal as a charming gift for any occasion.

Purple Heart Vase

 from minnesota

The year my husband died, my son gave the vase to me for Christmas. Because it has the heart on it, it means so mch to me. It reminds me of the 40 special years my husband and I were together. Thank you.

Manufacturer Details
Over the centuries, the artists and craftsmen of Kosta Boda have not only embodied the distinctive folkways of Scandinavian design, but helped define those traditions. When you buy and give Kosta Boda, you're buying and giving history - a lineage of great design and craftsmanship that has endured for more than 260 years.

When the USA was established our company was nearly 50 years old. The original Kosta glassworks was born in 1742 as a partnership, the name an acronym from the partners' surnames: Anders KOskull and Georg Boglislaus STAël von Holstein. As Kosta grew and prospered, we helped grow an entire industry in Småland, Sweden's "Kingdom of Glass." In the 20th century, Kosta and neighboring glasshouses Åfors and Boda, were merged under a common owner. In 1976, we were renamed Kosta Boda.

What makes Kosta Boda so special is that we continually draw on our long history in developing exciting new ideas and methods in design and glass craftsmanship. Kosta Boda's designers and glassmakers are showcased in exhibitions and permanent private and public collections throughout the world.
